The excitement was tangible as 30 learners gathered on the 1st of August, at Balwin’s Polofields site in Waterfall, to commence a tiling course. The accredited tiling training sponsored by the Balwin Foundation NPC, is part of an extensive programme aimed at equipping 200 previously disadvantaged individuals by July 2018, with a skill that could become a source of income and job creation.
The 8-day training programme conducted by Training Force started with theory training in order for learners to gain a clear understanding of all the elements required in tiling, from health and safety to measurement and preparation of surfaces and ratios to mix concrete etc.
Practical training included preparation of surfaces, correct use of tiling equipment, levelling, floor tiling, application of tiling to plastered surfaces including walls and floors, shower floor tiling, grouting and cleaning.
Most of the learners were from the surrounding communities including Alexandra and Klipfontein with a few others from further afield such as Etwatwa, Orange Farm and Pretoria.
Local (Region E Ward 32) councilor, Bongani Nkomo commented during a visit to see the learners in action: “This is such a great initiative and I am so proud of all the learners and what they have achieved in such a short space of time. Thanks, Balwin!”

Not only has Balwin embarked on this drive to upskill the disadvantaged communities, but it is also focused on local economic development through empowering SMMEs in townships surrounding Balwin developments.
