Introduction

International Literacy Day (ILD) is celebrated annually on 8 September to emphasise the importance of literacy for human rights and a sustainable society. The theme for 2023 was “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”.

The day aims to promote literacy for adapting to changing challenges and building inclusive, peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. It involves providing technical assistance, supporting research on literacy, raising awareness, and advocating for the rights of all people to literacy.

Literacy forms the cornerstone of active societal engagement, fosters economic growth, and drives social progress. It plays an integral role in creating a fair and sustainable world, and it is never too early to start sharing books with your children.download (5)
